Because BASE does not operate mines or quarries directly, our greatest environmental influence is in who we choose to work with — and how consistently we hold them to standard, long after the first contract is signed. A supplier's environmental record is reviewed with the same rigour as their production capacity, because both determine whether they stay in our network.
Our Commitments
Environmental screening
Every new supplier is reviewed for environmental permits and compliance history before partnership. A clean history is a condition of onboarding, not a preference. A supplier who can't produce clean permitting history doesn't get a provisional entry into our network while they sort it out.
Preference for efficiency
We favour producers who demonstrably minimise waste, water use and emissions. Where two suppliers meet the same specification, environmental performance is part of how we choose between them. Over time, this preference has shaped which producers we return to for repeat volume, not just which ones we onboard first.
Rehabilitation expectations
Quarry and mine partners are expected to maintain active land rehabilitation programmes. This is reviewed as part of our regular supplier assessment, not taken on trust. We ask for evidence, not assurance — site visits and documentation, not a line in a supplier's marketing material.
We can't control an extraction site directly — so we choose partners who run theirs the way we'd expect. It's an indirect form of control, but a real one — exercised through who gets our business and who doesn't.
