Health, safety and environment across the chain
From quarry face to port, BASE requires its partners to operate under recognised health, safety and environmental practices. We treat H.S.E. performance as a condition of doing business, not an afterthought — a supplier with a poor safety record is a supplier whose deliveries we can't guarantee, regardless of how good their material is. We would rather lose a supplier over a safety failure than keep one and hope the next incident doesn't affect a shipment we're responsible for.
Our Commitments
Safe operating standards
Extraction and processing partners must maintain documented workplace safety procedures, reviewed as part of our regular partner assessment. Documentation alone isn't sufficient — we look for evidence the procedures are actually followed on site, not just written down.
Incident reporting
Suppliers are required to disclose safety and environmental incidents that could affect delivery or compliance, not only incidents that become public. A supplier who withholds an incident report loses more trust with us than the incident itself would have cost them.
Transport safety
Logistics partners are selected against recognised safety and cargo-handling standards, the same way we vet extraction and processing partners. A well-run mine paired with a poorly-run haulage contractor is still a safety risk we won't accept.
Continuous improvement
H.S.E. performance is reviewed alongside quality and delivery performance at every partner review, not treated as a separate checkbox exercise. Safety doesn't get reviewed less often just because a partner's record has been clean for a while.
No shipment schedule takes priority over safe operating practice — that trade-off isn't one we're willing to make. Delays are recoverable; the consequences of an unsafe shortcut usually aren't.
